What exactly will you be doing with a drum?

As I don't expect anyone to be experienced drummers, nor do you need to be... , we will be doing the most simple and basic, yet most incredibly moving activity together...The Heartbeat and Breath Rhythm. We begin by closing our eyes, breathing slowly and evenly while holding your respective drums. One partner will begin to play a rhythm corresponding to their heartbeat, and continue to play. Your actual heartbeat will very shortly begin to fall into place with your drumming! Next, the other person will play a beat corresponding to their breathing.. one-two (in), and three-four (out). Both partners need to listen to and have the goal of moving in sync with what the other is playing. What often occurs is that after a short time, your breathing and heartbeats will match each other, because you will no longer hear the other person's rhythm. You have become "entrained" and are both beating and breathing as one. The symbolism of the day is made real by this activity!

We can drum as a group, the couple and myself, the couple and the wedding party, or everyone who has a drum can play in a group drum circle! Our goal will be to give rise to a group spirit through rhythm, and to find connections in this way! We will do this for several minutes, and it's been my experience that you both will know when the time is right o stop. Through non verbal communication, it will just happen!
